Built by union building trade workers,
Costco’s
opens third store in Pittsburgh area
Costco Wholesale Corporation recently celebrated the grand opening
of its newest store located in West Homestead’s Waterfront complex
on Thursday, March 8, 2007. The 143,000 square foot structure was built
by local building trade workers, with Whiting Turner serving as the
General Contractor.
Like its stores located in Robinson and Cranberry townships, the West
Homestead store offers a wide array of products and services, including
food, clothing, automotive and household goods. It also includes a pharmacy
and other amenities.

“Costco has been a supporter of local union contractors and building
trade workers in Western Pennsylvania,” said Jason Fincke, executive
director of the Builders Guild of Western Pennsylvania, Inc. “In
an effort to show our mutual support and thank the company for working
with the union building and construction trades’ industry, I would
encourage our members to consider purchasing Costco memberships and
frequenting its stores whenever possible.”
To prepare the site, approximately 50,000 cubic yards of slag and dirt
were excavated from a 38-foot deep hole. Subcontractors that worked
on the site included Century Steel, Wyatt Inc., Lagoni Erection, Friday,
Costa, D & G Mechanical, Carl Taylor & Sons, Lighthouse Electric,
Fayette Plumbing, Preferred Fire and Fisher Construction. The project
was completed in less than five months.
