Shell Chemical Appalachia LLC

At $6 billion the Shell Ethane Cracker Plant being constructed in Potter Township; Beaver County is the largest construction investment in the history of southwestern Pennsylvania. It’s also quickly become the catalyst for a burgeoning petrochemical industry that will forever change the economic landscape of the tri-state (PA/OH/WV) region.

Ethane, like propane and butane, is a natural gas liquid (NGL) found in certain natural gas deposits, including the Marcellus and Utica Shale Formations. NGLs are separated from natural gas and used for a variety of industrial, residential and commercial uses. Ethane is primarily used to create ethylene and would be the primary raw material for this facility. “Cracker” is industry lingo for this type of plant.

The Shell facility takes full advantage of the ready supply of natural gas products in the Marcellus Shale gas fields and is spurring multi-billion-dollar projects in that industry as well. The location creates shorter and more reliable supply chains than those for comparable facilities on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

With a more than five-year construction schedule, the massive 780-acre site on the banks of the Beaver River will have more than 5,000 union tradesmen on-site at peak construction in mid-2019. At present, nearly 1,000 construction professionals are on-site.
