The Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania, Inc. is renovating its new headquarters, just outside the City of Pittsburgh in Green Tree Borough. Upon completion, the MBA will apply for this building to become certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program.
“Members of the MBA take pride in Pittsburgh being known as a ‘Green City.’ When it came time to decide how to renovate our new building, there was no question that we would seek a high LEED rating,” said Jack Ramage, Executive Director of the MBA. “As an association that’s committed to sustainable ideas for the benefit of the construction industry, it’s important for the MBA to lead by example and obtain a high LEED rating for our headquarters.”
The MBA’s headquarters, a 10,000-square-foot building, is on pace to receive at least a Silver LEED Rating. The building has many green features, including high reflective roofs to reduce thermal loads, indoor pollutant control, and more efficient water fixtures (43% less than typical construction).

This $55.9 million project includes a 335,000 square foot addition to Baldwin High School along with 88,000 square feet of renovations. The project required demolition of the 1939 portion of the building and construction of a new three-story curvilinear academic wing that includes new classrooms, science labs, music room, band room, family and consumer science rooms, computer rooms, art rooms, technology education rooms, a new security entrance and a new gymnasium with 2,200-seating capacity. The building incorporates a new technology infrastructure that includes a video and data network, telephone system, a video surveillance system with a card access system, a fully automated HVAC system and a complete fire suppression system.
The project involved five phases performed over a three-year period. All phases occurred while the building was fully occupied, creating unique challenges to perform the work without disrupting classes and school activities (see related story on page 11).
“With union labor on this project, the quality of work was very good,” said Clifford R. Rowe, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of P.J. Dick, Incorporated. “The work was performed by topnotch contractors such as Easley & Rivers, Incorporated, Harris Masonry, Incorporated, Wayne Crouse, Lighthouse Electric, and Wheels Mechanical. The quality was of the utmost importance and each of the contractors paid attention to the fine details.”
