This $14.6 million project included the development of 85 acres of a 292-acre farm in Cecil Township into a national cemetery. It included excavation and regrading to develop two miles of roadways, new storm, sanitary and water infrastructure to support three administration buildings, a maintenance building and a public information center. Three committal shelters were built, along with 2,500 lawn crypts and 3,000 columbarium niches. More than 60,000 square feet of sidewalks were also constructed.

To retain the aesthetic integrity of the surrounding rural Pennsylvania farmland, structures were framed with Hardi Siding that mirrored the board siding used on area farmhouses.

The structures were also enhanced with a grade wainscot of field cut stone and standing seam metal roofs. A complete waste treatment facility was installed to meet all sanitary system requirements and an irrigation system was added to maintain the plantings and landscape.

“Coordinating and maintaining an 85-acre site was a unique challenge for us,” said Joseph Burchick, President of Burchick Construction Company, Inc. “By working closely with the director of the cemetery, we were able to ensure that the dignity of all ceremonies went uninterrupted during construction. It was a very rewarding and moving project for our workers and staff.”

This $14.2 million project includes, among other aspects, the design-build renovation of the second floor of Benedum Hall on the University of Pittsburgh for wet labs and a threestory concrete frame addition for dry labs. The bold, modern architectural design features sloped structural columns and front curtainwall along with polished concrete floors and exposed mechanical and electrical features in the ceilings. The 40,000-square-foot project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.

Among various construction challenges was the addition of low floor-to-floor heights to match existing Benedum Hall floors that were not innately conducive to laboratory spaces. It also included foundation installation in the sub-basement of an existing occupied building and close coordination with other contractors renovating Benedum Hall Tower.

“As a tangible example of green construction, the new MCSI facility will be used to test new enabling technology and for long-term monitoring of green building performance,” said Edward P. Elinski, Senior Project Manager of Mascaro Construction Company, LP. “Upon its completion, this facility will be one of the first Sustainability Institutes established on a university campus.”
