Duquesne University’s Power Recreation Center is a five-story 130,000 square foot retail, studio and fitness center located in Downtown Pittsburgh. Named for Duquesne’s first president, Spiritan Father William Patrick Power, the project includes first and second floors available to commercial and retail businesses.
The third and fourth expansive floors house full size basketball and volleyball courts, the construction of which required careful integration of large clear span floor plates. An elegant ballroom complete with adjoining fully equipped kitchen tops off the Power Center’s fifth floor.
Because the project was located in the midst of three busy city streets, access was limited and work on the Power Center needed to be carefully orchestrated so as not to disrupt traffic flow or interrupt ongoing activity in surrounding business and educational facilities. Throughout construction, detailed review of steel tolerances was also necessary to assure that they would meet the height requirements of a connecting pedestrian bridge that was being erected across Forbes Avenue.
The Power Center project work commenced in March of 2006 and was completed in December of 2007. Jendoco Construction Corporation worked closely with the design team and owner to comply with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) requirements.
“This was the sixth project successfully completed by our company and the union building trades for Duquesne University, giving further testimony to customer confidence and satisfaction with the skill, efficiency, cooperation and quality of work performed by union building and construction trades workers,” said Jendoco Construction Corporation Vice President John Zang III.
